Bitcoin’s $100K Return Seen as Unattainable in 2026

While bitcoin prices have seen a mild recovery during the last months, a further rise to break the $100,000 mark by the end of the year is seen as unlikely by crypto analysts, who believe that both the financial and geopolitical landscape are weighing on bitcoin’s strengths as an investment asset.

Alice Liu, CoinMarketCap’s head of research, stressed that bitcoin will continue recovering during Q4, but that the crypto industry as a whole will not recover as fast as bitcoin. “The worst of this year’s downturn is behind us, but the recovery will be uneven and led almost entirely by bitcoin,” she told SCMP.

CoinMarketCap expects bitcoin’s price to end 2026 between the range of $85,000 and $92,000. Nonetheless, Liu explained that this might change as several factors might push bitcoin prices down. One is the unresolved situation in Iran, which has caused increased oil price volatility, affecting bitcoin.

“Bitcoin has started to move inversely to oil. Every de-escalation headline has lifted crypto, and every escalation has sold it off,” she said. For Liu, Iran’s geopolitical tensions are “the single biggest swing factor for bitcoin this quarter.”

Another significant factor influencing bitcoin prices is the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, with further tightening likely pushing prices down.

“The risk of further tightening could weigh on sentiment,” said Angela Ang, BitGo’s APAC managing director.

She explained that recent changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) might prompt the Fed to raise rates again to rein inflation in. Also, high yields in lower-risk instruments, including U.S. Treasuries, might dampen demand for bitcoin.

“The biggest constraint right now is the cost of capital. Investors can earn attractive yields on lower-risk instruments such as Treasuries, so crypto is competing for capital on harder terms this quarter,” she concluded.

Bloomberg Intelligence strategist Mike McGlone anticipates that a crash to $10K is possible if the U.S. stock market experiences a 20% drawdown, with U.S. Treasuries becoming far more interesting investment instruments in this hypothetical situation.

The crypto market has been unable to recover since bitcoin registered record numbers in Oct. 2025, reaching an all-time peak price above $126,000 per coin. Soon after, between Oct. 10-11, 2025, the market experienced one of its largest crashes ever, with nearly $19 billion in leveraged positions being liquidated and BTC hitting intraday lows of $105K.

Bitcoin was recently trading just above $81,000. The price of bitcoin has sat beneath the $100,000 mark for the entirety of 2026 so far, with the asset lingering below the $90,000 level since mid-January and briefly falling below the $60,000 mark in June.
