Key Takeaways

Coinbase Opens 24/5 US Stock Trading to Eligible UK Users

Coinbase is expanding beyond digital assets in the United Kingdom, rolling out trading in U.S.-listed stocks as it pushes its “Everything Exchange” strategy into one of Europe’s largest retail investment markets.

From Aug. 6, eligible U.K. customers will progressively gain access to almost 4,000 equities through the same app they use for crypto and fiat balances. Trading will be available 24 hours a day, five days a week, extending access beyond standard Wall Street sessions.

Users can buy fractional shares from £1 and fund orders instantly with either pounds or USDC. Coinbase said stock trades will carry no commission, though other costs may still apply depending on the transaction structure.

“Every Coinbase U.K. user can now trade U.S. stocks, and crypto in one single app,” the company said. It described the launch as another step toward removing the divide between traditional investments and digital assets.

Coinbase Broadens Its UK Financial Offering

The stock service follows the launch of savings and crypto-backed borrowing products in the United Kingdom. Together, they form part of Coinbase’s effort to become a broader financial platform rather than remain focused solely on token trading.

U.K. Managing Director Keith Grose said the company is positioning itself as a one-stop destination for stocks, crypto, savings and related services.

The move also follows Coinbase’s receipt of U.K. investment-services authorization under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive framework. The Financial Conduct Authority approval allows the company to provide regulated services involving financial instruments, including equities and derivatives.

That authorization gives Coinbase a clearer route into traditional markets while subjecting the business to rules covering consumer protection and market integrity.

Longer Trading Hours Target Retail Participation

Coinbase is betting that easier access and extended hours will encourage more U.K. customers to invest in equities.

The company said survey data shows U.K. retail investors participate in the stock market at lower rates than their U.S. counterparts. By placing equities beside crypto balances, Coinbase aims to reduce the friction between the two asset classes.

“Crypto markets are 24/7/365,” Coinbase said in a blogpost. “By launching 24/5 stock trading, Coinbase is bringing more access and more hours to traditional stock trading for U.K. users.”

Coinbase One members will also continue earning uncapped rewards on eligible USDC balances used within the platform.

The launch marks a notable shift for a crypto-native company. Coinbase is no longer asking customers to choose between digital assets and conventional markets. It is building a platform designed to hold both, and betting that investors increasingly expect the distinction to disappear.
